While this unusual work may be used as an accompaniment for assembly singing, it is primarily intended for ensemble playing by any sized orchestra or band. The material ranges from the simplest selections for beginners to some of the great compositions of the masters. Every instrument in common use is provided for. The arrangements are written in such form and the parts woven together so ingeniously that the work is adaptable for practically any combination from the smallest amateur group to the largest professional organization. Melody for all of the selections is found in the 1st violin, 1st clarinet, 1st saxophone, and 1st cornet parts; the flute and oboe parts carry melody for most of the numbers; these parts are suitable for solo use. Almost every number may be used as a string quartet or quintet; or as a saxophone quartet; quintet, or sextet; or as a brass quartet; or as a combination of all of the strings and woodwinds. The modern vocal approach, namely, the "rote to note" method of music reading to which these volumes are adapted, makes them of special value to grade and high school groups. Students readily learn the mechanics of an instrument through the medium of familiar songs. Their understanding of pitch and time relationships, dynamics, and tone quality acquired through singing naturally carries over to the instrumental playing of the same selections.
