Book Title: Indians of Skagit County
Language: English
Author: Martin J Sampson
Type: Paperback Book
The treaty of 1855, in which the Indians ceded their land in return for promises, was negotiated by a group of well-meaning white men, under the pressure of the white settlers, but they were ill equipped in the sense that they lacked understanding of the Indian languages, politics, tribal divisions and boundaries. Nevertheless, with characteristic impatience, they pushed the agreement through. The unhappy results of this incomplete treaty, plus the tardiness of the Government in ratifying and carrying out its provisions, brought untold hardships to many Indians, both treatied and nontreatied.
